We arrived to find all the National camp spots full, you can book them we found out but there is a 2 day waiting period. We decided to stay at the Light House caravan park and drive in to check the beach camping before booking. Entry to the national park is $11 per car per day or $40 for a 1 month unlimited pass.
The drive to the nice beaches is long, some 50kms - 75kms, most of the beaches are rocky and not suitable for swimming. Around exmouth it's hard to navigate if you're looking for a particular beach, bad signage, inside the NP though the signs are good.
At the time we stayed here it was very windy and wasn't pleasant to be on the beach after about 10am when the wind picked up to ridiculous. We spent a lot of time driving around looking for a nice place to swim, there is really only 1 nice beach, turquoise bay. The water is freezing this time of year (october) David kept going blue and shivering so we could only snorkel for about 10 mins at a time.
We have seen whales from the light house lookout, turtles up close on the beach and dave saw some dolphins, wild horses, and randomly emus.
There was an amazing sunset a few days in with 3 rainbows and colourful clouds.
We stayed a week here to get some work done, the scenery is nice but the weather makes it hard to enjoy, overall a bit of a let down, not what the brochures advertise!
Lighthouse caravan park is good, only salt water on tap for vans and showers. Fresh water tank on site for drinking only.
The last 2 days of the stay the weather has improved, the air temp is now hotter so you feel like swimming. The ocean has also gone up a few degrees from freezing to just cold, but its much more bearable if you keep moving. In the shallows it can be quite pleasant. We found another nice swimming beach, its the nudest one haha, just south of the light house. Not too many rocks so you can walk out without booties, plenty of turtles to swim with you too. It says clothing optional so be prepared to see some bums and bits but some people stayed clothed for swimming and just sun baked naked.
If you happen to get a good run of weather (no wind, hot days) exmouth is a nice place to visit, but be prepared to travel some KMs.
